Letters of recommendation for workmen [manuscript], 1819, March - July

Robert Johnston, Jacquiline Massie, John Brockenbrough and Thomas Ritchie write letters of recommendation for Curtis Carter, a builder who is bidding on brick work at the University of Virginia. Archibald Stuart writes a letter of recommendation to Nelson Barksdale for Dabney Cosby as a bricklayer and Hugh Mercer recommends Mr. Smith of Fredericksburg as a painter and glaezer. J.E. Woodson and Jonathan Bailey write a recommendation for John Gorman as a stonecutter. Lancelot Minor and Andrew Kean recommend the carpenter Henry Holland to Captain Alexander Garrett. Minor's letter is re-directed by Dabney Minor to A.S. Brockenbrough.

Archibald Stuart was born near Staunton, Va. in 1757. He was educated at the College of William and Mary and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
